Artist Statement

After many years of working from her studio in Japan, YOSHIDA Hatsumi moved her studio to Bali, Indonesia in 1992 where she continues to pursue her work in creating one-of-a-kind fabric art pieces. Her Bali studio is adorned by array of originally crafted fabrics that are products of her spontaneous ideas and diligent labor. Ms. YOSHIDA’s signature technique treats various fibers collected from pineapples and bananas from her garden or sponges from her kitchen, torn into thin strips, sewn together and naturally dyed with colors from different organic materials. Her whimsical one-of-a-kind pieces are created with a combination of these fabrics and appeal to many.
