Artist Statement

Born in 1946, FUKUMOTO Shigeki has had no less than 16 solo exhibitions in Japan and taken part in some 36 group exhibitions in his homeland and overseas, notably Paris, Jakarta, London, Yogyakarta, Beijing, Koln, and, very recently, Boston, as part of the Rozome Masters of Japan Exhibition

His work is in the collections of the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto, Osaka Foundation of Culture, Kyushu Sangyo University, Fukuoka, Tamba Municipal Ueno Memorial, the Cleveland Museum of Art and more.

In his topic, Rozome and the West: A Cultural Translation Barrier, he will talk about the tradition of wax-resist dyeing called rozome, which has a rich history in Japan, but is relatively unknown outside. Shigeki will be concentrating on the special characteristics of Japanese rozome which have gained some recognition internationally.
